A Brief History of NWSC
As we approach our 50th anniversary camp in 2027, it is remarkable to think Northwest Sufi Camp was birthed in 1977! The first spiritual director was Majida Inayat Nelson — a jewel of a woman who will serve on teaching staff this year, and return as co-spiritual director for our Jubilee — 50th anniversary — camp!
NWSC has always been a family camp. In the 70’s many young Sufis were in the early stages of building a family, and the camp grew and learned how to do a camp — how to be a camp community — as they met year after year. Since the pandemic we have been rebuilding our Kids Camp, and now have family-friendly pricing to encourage more families to attend.
The organization was registered with the State of Oregon in 1982, and the Board of Directors has served every year since that time: preserving the traditions and opening to new influences and expressions. The Board provides the container to ensure NWSC stays alive!
The mission statement of NWSC, as stated in our bylaws is:
to spread the message of Sufism by sponsoring events including but not limited to camps, seminars and workshops. These events shall carry on the following activities:
present and express the teachings of Hazrat Inayat Khan and Murshid Samuel L. Lewis, as well as other Sufi mystics and illuminated souls;
provide instruction in spiritual practice and opportunities for mystical experience;
bring together Sufi teachers and students for the purpose of training and fellowship.
Sufis of all lineages — and non-Sufis as well! — are welcome! We hope you’ll join the caravan!
In the blessing stream of
Hazrat Inayat Khan
“A soul who is not close to nature is far away from what is called spirituality. In order to be spiritual one must communicate, and especially one must communicate with nature; one must feel nature.”
